Billionaire Birthday Blues

Part 1

“Happy birthday to yoooooou!” The mansion was full of guests as the birthday girl blew out her twenty-four candles and everyone clapped. She was a lovely young brown chipmunk woman all dressed in red with short wavy hair. Her green eyes sparkled with glee.
A large chipmunk man walked over with a smile, “Happy birthday, my dear!”
The young woman giggled, “Thank you, father, you’re the best!”
The man smiled at the guests, “Thank you all so much for coming to my beautiful daughter’s birthday party! I must be the luckiest father in the world, not to mention the proudest! On behalf of Gilmore Enterprises, I thank you all!” Everything clapped, including a pair of familiar young hedgehogs.
Shadic the Hedgehog, better known as Detective Shadow Quill, and his best friend and partner, Demon Death the Hedgehog, clapped as they watched the festivities. They were both dressed in handsome clothes for the occasion, though neither of them looked as excited for the party as the other guests.
Demon spoke, his handsome clothes open and casual, proving how little he cared for the formalities, “Why did we bother to come again?”
Shadic sighed, “Because we were kindly invited, remember?”
Demon muttered to him quietly so not to be overheard, “We don’t even like her.”
Shadic smirked, “Maybe not, but I sure won’t turn down an invite to a rich party. Have you seen the food here?” Demon glanced at the long tables of food and grinned, his mouth watering. Shadic noticed with a smirk, “That’s what I thought, now quit complaining. It’s not everyday we get invited to a billionaire birthday party, and I’m going to enjoy it.” Demon shrugged, finding no disagreement with that.
The father of the birthday girl smiled, “Before we continue with the celebration, it is a great pleasure to introduce our special guest of honor! The famous young detective, Shadow Quill!” Everyone grew excited as they turned their attention on Shadic and Demon.
Shadic smirked as he pulled out his trademark black feather quill, “The pleasure is mine, sir.”
The father smiled, “I must tell you all, my lovely daughter Raika here had the honor of having the young detective solve a case for her!”
Shadic chuckled, “Oh, it was nothing. I just located her lost dog for her, that’s all. I was happy to assist her.”
Demon muttered, a bit annoyed, “Not without her whining like a little brat about it.” Shadic nudged him.
Just then a young man, a tan wolf with large glasses, walked over, looking rather excited, “You really are as incredible as they say. I’m a big fan of yours.” He quickly pulled out a card, “Here’s my card! Donald Hilbler at your service! You have no idea what an honor this is for me! You’re kind of my hero!”
Shadic accepted his card, “Well, that’s very flattering of you, but I’m just a regular guy who just knows how to use his head.” He smiled at Demon, “Besides, I would never be able to solve all those cases without my partner here, along with some others pals of mine who help out. If you got a good head on your shoulders and good, reliable friends at your side, you really can’t go wrong.” Demon smirked as Donald looked inspired.
Then another young man walked over, this one being a very regal brown cat with sharp green eyes. He chuckled, “Forgive Donald. That’s the price you have to pay for being famous sometimes.” He smirked, “We ordinary mortals fall apart when in the presence of true genius.” He looked over at Raika, who was talking with guests, “Raika’s judgement is second to none. She wanted the best and she picked you.”
Just then, someone spoke, “What tail-kissers. Yes, I mean you two.” The two guys looked to see a third young man walk over. He was a charming, yet clever black mink with sly blue eyes. His long hair was pulled back in a ponytail.
Donald spoke, “What are you talking about, Clinton?”
The new guy, Clinton, smirked, “Oh please. You’re simply complimenting the young detective to play up to Raika.” He smirked coldly towards Shadic, “It’s painfully obvious there’s nothing special about this little twit. Open your eyes.”
Shadic’s eye twitched in annoyance, “That was uncalled for.”
The cat guy scoffed, “Says you!”
Clinton grinned and looked over at a younger guy, more Shadic and Demon’s age, “Well, young Michael won’t lie. Let’s ask him.”
The younger guy, a grey bobcat with big grey eyes, had been hearing their conversation, “Well, I had been looking forward to meeting the detective all week. Though, I must admit I’m a bit disappointed. That bit with finding the dog just seemed like child’s play to me. Plus since he’s been here, he hasn’t really done anything but eat and hang out with his friend like regular kids.”
Shadic was now clearly ticked, “I did already say it wasn’t that big a case. She asked me to find a dog, and that’s what I did. At least have the decency to look over my actually serious cases before judging me based on a simple case like that one. More than that, who are you to judge how I should act? Might I remind you, I actually am a kid here. I’m literally the youngest one here.”
“He’s absolutely right. You boys ought to be less judgemental.” They looked at the tall black hedgehog man as he continued, “Isn’t it a bit much to ask that he put on an act of maturity and importance all the time? After all, he really is just a boy. An exceptional one, but a boy all the same. Even young geniuses have personal lives of their own. Besides, would anyone really feel comfortable around him if he acted as snobby as the rest of you?”
Shadic sighed, “Thank you.”
The man continued, “Yes, he probably plays it casual so he can get information from people who wouldn’t otherwise offer it.”
Shadic smirked, “Well said, Mr. Dirk Copeland, the Gilmore and Co. LTD Director.”
The tall man, Dirk, laughed, “See what I mean?” He looked over a Raika, “Raika truly is king. She saw right through the young detective’s outward appearances.”
Michael smiled, “She certainly is bright, isn’t she?”
The cat man nodded, “Definitely, and she’s drop-dead gorgeous as well.”
Donald smiled big, “She’s got it all, that’s for sure. I wonder what lucky guy’s gonna win her heart.”
Clinton smirked as he saw how they all clearly swooned for her, “I couldn’t say, but he’s going to have to win her old man’s heart as well, because he’s already said whoever marries Raika will be the next president of Gilmore Enterprises.”
Shadic watched the young men who watched Raika. He found that very interesting. Seemed there were some here for more than just good food and congratulations to the birthday girl.

Sometime later, Shadic groaned as he walked through the halls of the manor, “Geez. It’s like maze in this place. I just want a stupid bathroom.” He walked alone down the dark hallway, only lit by dim lights on the walls. He looked up at the ceiling, “Why is it so dark down here? They have ceiling lights, but they're not on. Odd.”
He opened one door, squinting in the dark, “Nope. Looks like a storage closet.” He closed the door and walked down to the next one, “This looked like it.” He tried the switch by the door, but no light came on.
He groaned, “What is with the lights down here?”
“What do you think you’re doing there?” Shadic turned to see a old grey mouse woman.
He smiled, “Sorry, I was just looking for the bathroom.”
The woman sighed, though she sounded good-natured, “Forget it. You boys miss even when the lights are working.” She pointed back down the hall, “Use the one by the entryway, alright?”
Shadic nodded, “Yes, ma’am. Thanks anyways.”
The woman looked at the dark room, “Now why is that light out? The maintenance man just replaced all the bulbs in this wing the other day.” She sighed as she rubbed her chin, “Big houses are nice, but they’re a pain in the rear to keep up.” Shadic nodded, knowing about that all too well from pass experiences.

Later that night, after most of the guests had left, Shadic and Demon were with Raika, her father, and the five guys from earlier. As they waited for their cars to be brought around by the valet, the valet actually hurried over. He sighed, “Excuse me, sure. I’m afraid Miss Raika’s car has a flat tire.”
Her father was surprised, “You’re kidding!”
Raika was surprised, “A flat? Oh dear.”
The cat guy grinned, “No problem. I’ll give you a ride, Raika. Come on, let’s go.”
Donald spoke up with a smile, “Hey, I’ve got a moonroof in my coop!”
Then Michael pipped in, “Forget them, I’ve got a brand new convertible!”
The valet spoke, “Pardon me, sirs, but it’s not just Miss Raika’s car that has a flat. Yours do as well.” Everyone was surprised by that. They all headed out back to where the cars had been parked and found the tires were all indeed flat.
Clinton sighed, annoyed, “I’d love to get my hands on the punks who did this.”
Dirk sighed, “They got one of mine too.”
Clinton scoffed, “I swear, this kind of stuff really has me off.”
Shadic watched Demon checking the tires on their jeep, “How’s it look?”
Demon sighed, “That’s the odd thing. They didn’t touch ours.”
Shadic was surprised, “Odd indeed.”
Dirk spoke, “What a disappointing end to an otherwise perfect evening.”
The father spoke, “Six flat tires. I guess you’ll have to share a ride with some of the guests with good cars.”
Raika scoffed, “Count me out.” They men looked at her. She crossed her arms, “I’m not squeezing into a car with a stranger. Not on my birthday. I’ll just spend the night here with Nonee.”
Her father looked worried, “I worry when you’re here alone.”
Raika wasn’t changing her mind, “I’ve already made my decision, father. I’m spending the night here. Besides, I’m not going to be alone. Nonee will be with me.”
The cat guy grinned, “I’ll stay the night to protect Raika and Nonee, sir.”
Donald smiled big, “Yeah, me too, sir!”
Michael grinned, “Count me in as well!”
Dirk chuckled, “Well, that’s very admirable. I guess I can stay to protect Raika from her protectors, eh, Robert?”
Raika’s father chuckled, “Alright, it’s settled. You youngsters can stay here with Mr. Copeland.” He smiled at Dirk, “I won’t worry if you’re here, Dirk.”
Dirk smiled, “That’s a big compliment coming from you, sir.”
Before long, all the guests had left, including Raika’s father. The young men kindly led Raika back inside, being quite the gentlemen. All except the cat guy. He watched them with a smirk, “You silly fools. Raika’s husband was already decided on two years ago.”
What he didn’t notice was that a couple of the guests hadn’t yet left. Shadic and Demon stood off to one side, both having heard him. They glanced at each other, both a bit curious now.

Inside, after everyone had a meal, Shadic spoke up as they were all sitting in a fancy sitting room, “Thanks again for letting us stick around with you all. It’s hard to leave such a beautiful manor, or all the incredible foods served here. After all, Demon and I may never get to enjoy such a fancy lifestyle again.”
Donald smiled, “Don’t be silly! We’re happy to have you! Someone of your reputation deserves it! Even a pair of young geniuses ought to have some fun!” He grinned, “Hey, maybe you could tell us about some of your cases!”
Dirk smiled, “Yes, I think that would be a good idea. I’m curious how your young mind works so famously.”
Raika smiled, “Hey, don’t be boring. How about a game of cards instead, gentlemen? And don’t be deceived, I do play a mean hand of poker.”
Clinton sighed, “Thanks, but no thanks. I’d much rather do something useful, like drive the young detective and his friend home. It can be pretty tricky driving back to town on a dark night like this. The private road isn’t exactly easy to navigate.”
Raika smirked coldly, “Too bad you’re leaving, Clinton. You might have won my hand. I didn’t think a guy like you would be afraid of a little friendly competition.”
Clinton smirked coolly, “I didn’t come here to win your hand, Raika. I came here to put in an appearance with your father in the hopes that he might throw a little more business our company’s way.” He glanced back at her, “But don’t worry. I think these guys are interested.”
Donald spoke, “Come on, Clinton, stay.”
The cat smirked, “Nah, let him go.”
Michael grinned, “I’m with Steve. If Clinton wants to bow out, that’s fine with me.”
Clinton smirked and turned to Shadic and Demon, “Then I guess I’ll be your boys’ chauffeur. We’ll be leaving now. Mind handing me your keys?”
Demon glanced at Shadic, who shrugged and spoke, “Sure, why not? It’ll give me an excuse to try their wine if I’m not driving.” Demon pulled out the keys and dropped them in Clinton’s hand.
Suddenly, someone smacked them from Clinton’s hand. They looked to see Raika, who looked angry. Clinton turned to her, annoyed, “What’s the big idea?”
Raika spoke, “So, you want to leave, is that it? Well, go ahead, but don’t be surprised if you never do business with my father again.” She turned from him.
Clinton was surprised, then angry, “Hey, that’s not fair!”
Raika ignored him as she walked out, passing the old woman from earlier, “Nonee, I’m going to change. I’ll be right back.”
The old woman, Nonee, nodded, “Yes, Miss Raika.”
Raika glanced back at the guys with a sly smile, “You know what you remind me of? Little birds. I open up the cage and invite you all to fly off into the wild, but you choose to stay. I guess you’re scared you won’t get enough to eat out there.” She laughed as she continued off, “Don’t worry, Raika with feed you.” The guys didn’t seem to care for that too much, especially not Clinton.
Shadic and Demon only watched in silence. Shadic ran his fingers over his feather, thinking. Something was going on here, and he was curious to know what.

It was some time later that they were all playing a game of cards around a table. Shadic spoke as he looked over his hand, “So, allow me to take a swing in the dark. You all used to be members of the same yacht club, correct? That’s how you all seem to know each other so well.”
Steve smiled, “Wow, how impressive. Yes, we all had a blast together. We used to take Raika’s cruise to a private island. Even Clinton was smiling in those days.”
Clinton smiled, the only one not playing as he sat by himself to one side of the room with a book, “I admit, I’d never have more fun in my life.” Then he sighed, “But everything changed after the accident happened.” The guys all looked bothered by the mention of it.
Demon was curious, “Accident? What accident?”
Steve smiled a bit nervously, “Well, it happened a long time ago.”
Donald stormed over to Clinton, “The accident we agreed never to bring up again.” Clinton shrugged, clearly not caring.
That’s when Dirk looked at the clock, “Pardon the interruption, but shouldn’t Raika have joined us by now? It’s already after ten thirty.”
Michael spoke, “You’re right, Mr. Copeland.”
Clinton scoffed, “Let her primp. That’s just less time I have to put up with her rude behavior.” So, they continued a short time longer.
It was Michael who spoke up about it again at eleven, “I think we’d better check up on her. Something’s not right. It’s been too long.”
Dirk stood up, “She may be asleep.” He looked over at Nonee, “Nonee, would you mind? If Raika is in her bedroom, would you tell her we’re waiting for her?”
Nonee nodded, “Yes, of course.”
Dirk turned to the others, “Do I have any volunteers to check the other rooms?”
Donald stood up, “Sure, I don’t mind.”
Steve stood too, “I’m in.”
Michael nodded and stood too, “I’ll check upstairs.” With that, they all headed around the manor, looking for Raika.
After a while of looking, they returned to the sitting room. Dirk spoke as they walked in, “How strange. Where could she have gone?”
Donald shook his head, “I don’t know, but if she’s not inside, we’d better look for her outside.”
Shadic stood up, “That would be best. This is getting a bit worrisome. We should all be looking now. We can split up into groups and search the grounds. If she doesn’t turn up, we’ll try the woods.”
Clinton scoffed, “How ridiculous. It’s all just a ploy to get our attention.”
Shadic glanced at him, “And if it’s not?” Clinton didn’t have an answer for that, so he joined them. They all searched the grounds in groups. Clinton, Nonee, and Michael were in one group, Dirk, Steve, and Donald were in another, and Demon and Shadic were on their own.
Shadic spoke a he and Demon wandered the woods, “I don’t like it. Why would she leave the house on a night like this?” He stopped when he felt a drop hit his head.
Demon looked up to see rain starting to fall, “Great, now we’ve got rain to deal with, too. And from the looks of it, it’s gonna get nasty.” He looked at Shadic, “We should go find the others. Hopefully they’ve had better luck.” Shadic nodded and they headed back to the manor as the rain started to fall harder.
As they reached the front door, Demon stopped, “Hey, is he ok?” Shadic stopped and looked too. There was Steve, leaning over the fountain out front. Demon was confused, “He looks like he’s sick.”
Shadic gasped, “Oh no.” He ran over and pulled Steve back. Steve limply collapsed to the floor, his eyes wide and empty.
Demon gasped as he saw it, “No way!”
Shadic sighed, “Yes way.” He looked back at Demon, his face dead serious, “He’s dead.”
Hello, world. Long time, no see, right? :XD: Hope this makes up for me being gone some much lately. Now that I'm working two new jobs that actually have me working every single day, I've been pretty busy. ^^; Like reeeeeeaaaaally busy. This I actually had for some time now, before I got the jobs actually, so I decided to finally share it. So, I hope you enjoy! =) For now, I may not be on often like before until maybe fall, since then the one pool I work the most at will be closed for the season. Hopefully, I'll also get to start my Youtubing when that time comes, so you might get some all new stuff from me. =)

Till then, I hope you guys understand my little Hiatus. (Wow, never would have imagined I'd ever be saying that!)

This is awesome! :D

I don't wanna sound pushy but will you continue Donovan's tale by any chance by Fall? I'm still curious about what happens next ^^;

Well, I shouldn't say anything. I haven't finished a single story except for Brotherly Origin, which was partly DD666's work too.
